Since the start of the school year, several new clubs have been created on campus. Check out some of the many clubs and learn more about them below.
Finance Management, Hospitality and Marketing Club (FMHM)
To provide students with an opportunity to learn more about business, twelfth-grader Nathan Jeffries founded Finance Management, Hospitality and Marketing Club (FMHM). Jeffries used the former Pine View clubs, Future Business Leaders Associations (FBLA) and DECA, as a template when creating FMHM. According to Jeffries, he was inspired to develop FMHM when he noticed there were no student organizations dedicated to helping students who wish to go into a business major in college. Club members will have the opportunity to go to various conferences from the state level to the international level. At each conference the student can compete in one of the four subjects of FMHM: finance, management, hospitality, or marketing. “There is more to business than people think, and they should look into all sections of it,” Jeffries said.
Meeting Time: Wednesdays 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Location: Portable 22
Investor’s Club
With an interest in the ins-and-outs of investing, ninth-grader Joshua Widjaja started the Investor’s Club. At the start of the meetings, Widjaja reviews vocabulary terms regarding investing and the stock market. Utilizing these new terms, participants take part in an online stock simulation, Market Watch. The simulation consists of a group of club participants who buy and sell virtual stocks in individual portfolios. Each participant is given a limited budget in which they invest in stocks and create interest rates. The club is for anyone who wants to deepen their understanding of the stock market.
Meeting Time: Fridays 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Location: Portable 8
Pine View Heart 2 Heart
Tenth-grader Nathalie Bencie is the President and founder of Pine View Heart 2 Heart, a club which discusses its progress to make Pine View a “heart safe school.” The club follows a check list of accreditation elements in order to achieve the heart safe school label. With help from the Sudden Arrhythmia Death Syndrome Foundation, Pine View Heart 2 Heart strives to prepare students and faculty for cardiac emergencies. The club has trained staff to become CPR certified, and offers the same training to students who join.
Meeting Time: Mondays 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Location: Gym
High School Programming Club
After a summer delving into the world of programming, tenth-graders Sachit Gali and Gia Douglass created the High School Programming Club at the start of the school year. “Right now we are just teaching the members the basics about programming but in the future we hope to get more into game and site development as well as things like artificial intelligence,” Gali said. The club is designed to help its members become familiar with the programming software Python. “If you’re into programming and want to find a new hobby we would love to have you come and join,” Douglass said.
Meeting Time: Tuesdays 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Location: Room 118
Junto Club
Eleventh-grader Ashley Naidel and ninth-grader Emily Naidel were inspired to start the Junto Club after finding some information about the origins of the concept. “ I found that Benjamin Franklin actually came up with this idea about a discussion based meeting and I wanted to bring it to Pine View,” Ashley said. The club is a discussion based and problem-solving club in which its members can come to each meeting with problems that they have and work toward solutions. “I think this club is great because Pine View students are always thinking and coming up with solutions to different problems so to have a place where they can discuss issues is something that is very applicable,” club sponsor and socials studies teach Jack Francis said.
Meeting Time: Thursdays 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Location: Portable 19
World Cultures Club
Founded by ninth-grader and president Maddy Halcomb, the club was created to address the differences in culture, language and lifestyle that exist in countries across the globe. At each meeting, a speaker from a specific country will present themselves and their culture to classes to further their knowledge on that part of the world. “I felt the need that students needed to expand their knowledge on specific areas of the world that are often labeled by social media or stereotypes,” Halcomb said. “With World Culture Club, I hope to accomplish that goal.”
Meeting Time: Tuesdays 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Location: Portable 21
Go Green Club
Eleventh-graders Harrison Epstein and Madison Hannon share their enthusiasm for the environment as co-presidents of their new club, Go Green Club. According to Epstein, the club was started to, “promote the preservation of the Earth and increase sustainability.” The club operates on the premise of a Native American proverb, “We don’t inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.” The club works on sustainable projects and plans to go on beach walks each month to clean up the coastal areas. Spanish teacher and club sponsor, Patricia Gerlek-Rzepka said, “My students approached me about this club as they knew I’m a green kind of person. I’m so excited to see what this club will be able to accomplish.”
Meeting Time: Mondays 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Location: Portable 6
Journalism Club
As advisor for the Torch and the View, Christopher Lenerz wanted to bring journalism to the younger grades. To do this, Lenerz started the middle school Journalism Club. The club is open to all students in grades six through eight, and aims to teach the basics of journalism by providing experience for the students. Lenerz said, “I saw the enthusiasm with younger students and since I was already involved in the Torch I wanted to take advantage of the opportunity.” Students part of the club will have the chance to write for the Match as well as PVTorch.com.
