On Jan. 27, President Trump signed executive orders restricting the admission of Syrian refugees as well as regulating immigrants of other countries. Countries that were under the travel ban include Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Syria, Sudan and Somalia, all Muslim-containing countries.
However, the ruling was overturned by a US federal judge Feb. 3. It is currently being reviewed in a US court of appeals as to whether it shall be reinstated or not.
We asked Pine View students what their thoughts were on the matter.
What are your opinions on the refugee ban?
Jasper Carmen, Grade 11
I don’t think that it’s necessary at all. I think we’re just starting problems that we don’t really need right now and that we shouldn’t be starting in the first place.”
Travis Alexander, Grade 10
I think it’s okay, but not perfect. I’d rather have Trump protect the security of Americans than to let in immigrants that don’t have rights protected by the Constitution, and from countries that ISIS poses a risk in.”
Moses Glickman, Grade 11
It feels like an extreme measure without a point, given the potential death threat of only two Americans dead per year from American Jihadi attacks. Trump should be focusing on larger public safety priorities and also be paying attention to desensitizing terrorist sentiment.”
