Searching for a new market to shop at can be a difficult task. Luckily, the Kiev Deli makes this experience easy and fun. This modern European shop offers everything from cultural candies to sliced meats, assuring that you get what you came for.
Bringing Ukranian culture to Sarasota, owner Olga Klothakis and her husband decided to relocate eight years ago and opened their own ethnic market close to home.
In Sarasota there are few ethnic markets catering towards those from Europe.
“We need to bring some food from the Ukraine to the people to further diversify and to connect the Russian and Polish communities through their culture,” Klothakis said.
This compact deli is overflowing with items for sale that could not be found anywhere else. Traditional candies and sweets are located at the front of the store next to the entrance, enticing customers to peruse further. Russian ice cream is available in a cooler next to the door as well.
Near the back of the deli, one can find more savory items like special pickles, various nuts, fish and ethnic sauces. They also offer a European and Mediterranean sandwich catering service, spreading the ethnic food further than the store’s boundaries.
Combined with the friendly staff, close quarters, low prices and various products, the Kiev Deli creates a welcoming, cozy environment. Placed in a plaza, the red and white of the sign creates an eye-popping look that draws customers in. Immediately after walking in, the employees greet the shopper with a traditional, “Hello, how are you?” in order to assess the customer’s language of preference, as many of the regulars are native Poles. While Polish is spoken at the Kiev Deli, it’s not necessary to enjoy shopping there.
So if you ever find yourself tired of traditional, conglomerate stores, Kiev Deli is located at 4031 Cattlemen Rd, Sarasota, FL 34233 and is open from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday. They can also be contacted at (941) 377-7427.
