This longstanding tradition, along with Mr. Pine View, has been documented in The Torch since the very start. This week’s Throwback Thursday travels back seven years to take a look behind the scenes at Mr. and Miss Pine View 2015.

Every year, the Torch sits down with the newly-crowned Mr. and Miss Pine View to learn a bit about the competition — on stage and behind the scenes. This year twelfth-graders Aravind Byju (Mr.) and Katherine Salvatori (Miss) have had the honor. Here is what they had to say:
How does it feel to be Mr. and Miss Pine View?
Miss: It feels pretty incredible. It’s something I always hoped would happen but I never expected, so it was a pleasant surprise.
Mr: Terrible.
What made you want to be Mr. and Miss Pine View?
Mr: Terrible.
Miss: I know a lot of girls in my grade applied, but it’s something I’d always thought would be really fun and rewarding, ever since I got to Pine View in sixth grade.
What is your best memory from the event?
Miss: Winning.
Mr: Katherine winning. I went back in time. You can’t prove I didn’t. You’ve never seen me and Marty McFly in a room at the same time.
Following the themes of your show, why did you choose the fashion designer you chose (Miss)?
Miss: Ralph Lauren spoke to my soul in a way that I cannot express with words. I felt drawn to the brand.
If you could change anything about the experience, what would you change?
Mr. I would learn to sing.
Miss: I would probably not be as anxious before the show. I mean, it’s well known that people take Miss Pine View more seriously than Mr. Pine View, even though we still had a fun time with it, but the second half of the show I really wasn’t worried about anything. I really didn’t think I had a chance of winning or really cared about it at that point, so I wish I had had that mentality for the whole show.
What does being Mr. and Miss Pine View mean to you?
Miss: It’s definitely an honor. I just hope I can do a good job being the role model that Miss Pine View is for younger girls, and really set a good example.
Mr. I think it means embodying the characteristics of Pine View and giving back to a community that has given so much to me.
What advice would you give to future Mr. and Miss Pine View contestants?
Miss: Just have fun with it. Don’t be stressed about the process, because the night goes by so quickly. Enjoy every moment.
Mr: Enjoy every second, because the seconds you spend being nervous are seconds you won’t remember.
Did anything interesting happen behind the scenes?
Miss: For sure. My favorite moments were the ones spent in preparation for my act. There were eight guys in my act and they actually came to my dance studio to learn the routine. It was a really fun experience to see all of the guys in a dance studio with an instructor learning a dance with hats and gloves.
