As first period ends, sleepy high school students travel in groups or pairs between classes, watching the sun burn away the heavy vapor. 
With the end of second period, the last remaining tendrils of shadowy fog dissipate, revealing the time on Pine View’s new sundial. Twelfth-grader Griffin Wilkens-Plumley sits quietly on the west side of benches, a daily routine for him. 
The sidewalk adjacent to the media center teems with students meandering, rushing, or chatting with friends on their way to fifth-period classes. A close-knit trio of high schoolers cast long shadows on a rare empty patch of sidewalk. 
For younger students, the sundial provides a unique area to eat, talk, or study.
